This week was full of great opportunities to dress up! It started with the Wednesday night youth activity where the young men and women submitted their favorite youtube videos and then came dressed up for the awards. Like a Grammy’s or Emmy’s or whatever prize good movies get (I can never remember!). The kids were excited for different reasons. Sam was excited to see the videos, Lizzie was excited for a chance to dress up. It was fun to see her wearing an old dress of mine and so great to see her get excited about getting ready. She found the hairstyle she wanted online and I attempted to make it work. Not bad for my first try if I do say so myself! Once everyone was ready I could suddenly see into the future of formal dance preparations! I can imagine when Sam and Lizzie are 16 and 17 having them both getting ready for a formal dance. Who knows, maybe by then they will be good enough friends that they will want to double date? With the two of them being only 14 months apart in age, it is not too farfetched to think that they might even be interested in dating each other’s friends! Aren’t my big kids handsome? Not to mention my good-looking husband!
Then last night (Saturday) we had the American Heritage School Family Ball. It is always SO FUN. Most years there is a live big band and lots and lots of happy families dancing together. The high school kids use it as an opportunity to go to a formal dance together. This year we were feeling a little worn out from how busy life has been and so Friday night Grant and I decided maybe we wouldn’t go. William wasn’t that excited about going since he has a bit of a love/hate relationship with other second grade girls right now, and Sam and Lizzie seemed indifferent. Anna however, was beyond excited. Saturday morning rolled around and she came in at 6 am sharp, woke us up and told us that she was going to decide what dress she was going to wear for the ball. Grant and I sleepily agreed that there was no way we were getting out of it this year! When we really woke up about an hour later she had all of her dresses layed out and was weighing the pros and cons of each of them…which one was fanciest, which one twirled the best, which facilitated “lifts” best. We went and had a wonderful time, mostly because of Anna’s enthusiasm. William opted out and stayed home with the Saxeys. Maybe he remembers the year when he was about two that we left him dancing in a spot with Sam and decided to fox trot around the dance floor. William broke away from his place with Sam and followed our dance moves around the floor crying and holding up his arms saying, “Hold you! Hold you!”. The rest of the night he would not let us out of his sight so Grant and I cha-cha’d and waltzed with him in our arms. Last night Anna danced with me, with her friend Mary, with Lizzie and of course with Grant who did some very exciting lifts with her. (Their special dance tradition). I am counting on many more years of family dances and many more memories of our children dancing in our arms.
