Poetry Pros

September 1, 2018 by candicebeckwith Leave a Comment

Tonight we read poetry for our bedtime story. We opened up Stevenson’s “A Children’s Garden of Verses”. This is not an ordinary occupation for our bedtime ritual. Usually we read a chapter book or a picture book but tonight I wanted the children to really feel the mood of the poems we read. And I absolutely love to read poems aloud! I started with “Bed in Summer”:

In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer, quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.
I have to go to bed and see
the birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people’s feet
Still going past me in the street.
And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day?

I felt like the experience was a total victory! Instead of being bored by poetry, Anna and William were moaning empathically as I read what it is like to have to go to bed while it is still light in the summer. (One of the things they dislike above all else.) They were totally into it! Then we shifted the mood a little and read, “Autumn Fires”:

In the other gardens
And all up the vale,
From the autumn bonfires
See the smoke trail!
Pleasant summer over
And all the summer flowers,
The red fire blazes,
The grey smoke towers.
Sing a song of seasons!
Something bright in all!
Flowers in the summer,
Fires in the fall!

We discussed what the described fires in the fall represented. They concluded (on their own) that fires in the fall don’t just mean piles of leaves being burned but also the flaming color of autumn leaves. I felt a swelling of joy as they captured the beauty and depth of these sweet little rhymes. Then, they each chose a few to read aloud. It was sweet to hear them try to read with expression and feeling. What is it about verse that touches our hearts so? Perhaps because it’s cadence and rhythm is akin to music. There is a melody in poetry that breaks down barriers much like music does. Whatever the reason, I cherish the time we had tonight. I am coming to find out that moments like these become fewer and farther between as children age and before I know it the moments will be gone. Sam leaves in a year. I can hardly stand the thought of it.

A Few Kid Quotes

February 22, 2016 by candicebeckwith Leave a Comment

I offered Anna a piece of baguette. She declined saying matter-of-factly, “That kind of bread makes me tired of chewing it and it roughs up my mouth.”

We just began reading Isaiah in our morning scripture study. We gave the children a little heads-up that Isaiah can be a hard to understand at times. William (with full confidence in my abilities) suggested that we read each verse and then I “translate” the verse for him.  I only wish I understood Isaiah so well.

This morning William had a voracious appetite. After having huge amounts cereal and kefir, and asking for some tacos I offered him a chicken sandwich (he loves non-breakfast food for breakfast). He held it in his hands and said, “I don’t know if I should eat this. My tummy is saying ‘no’ but my mouth is saying yes!” How many times do I eat more than I should because the food tastes so good while my tummy is saying, “NO!”?

God Really Knows His Children

June 3, 2015 by candicebeckwith Leave a Comment

It finally got hot here. After the wettest May in Utah’s recorded history, and cold temperatures to go with it, it is rather nice to have some warm days. This was officially the first year I put my garden in in the rain. Two days ago we turned the air conditioner on in our house and so our basement is now freezing. At bedtime Lizzie went hunting for all her blankets (she has a fuzzy blanket collection- thanks to the influence of my sister Rebecca) and found that Sam had one of them. Sam, in older brother teasing fashion closed and locked his door and refused to let her in to get her blanket. Lizzie was so frustrated! She went in her room and got in bed. She had the following conversation in her head with herself:

“You haven’t read your scriptures yet today.”
“I am so tired, I don’t want to read my scriptures”
“Read them, it will help. In fact, go to 2 Nephi chapter 2 verse 1”
“FINE!” She opens her scriptures, not to where she is reading chronologically, but to a completely different part of the Book of Mormon. And reads the following verse:

“And now, Jacob, I speak unto you: Thou art my firstborn (Lizzie substituted firstborn for second born) in the days of my tribulation in the wilderness.  And behold, in thy childhood thou hast suffered afflictions and much  sorrow, because of the rudeness of thy brethren.” 2 Nephi 2:1

See God really knows His children

The End of an Era

May 19, 2015 by candicebeckwith Leave a Comment

I started this post ten days ago…

Today I taught preschool for the last time ever. I have been part of a preschool co-op since Sam (13) was two! For years my friends and I took turns teaching our children. We had lessons about everything from bugs to dinosaurs to the five senses (that was a fun one!).  In Virginia a large part of our teaching was field trips to downtown D.C. and other fun places. It was an essential and regular part of our lives because as young mothers we needed each other! Not to mention the benefit to our kids of learning to interact peacefully with other children. I will always cherish the sweet interactions I have had with my friends and their adorable children. Today, on the last day I was telling a story with a puppet and one of the cute boys excitedly said to me, “I LOVE your stories!” I felt so warm and fuzzy remembering that story telling has always been something I enjoy and glad that it has brought pleasure to the children I have taught. I remember even as a teenaged babysitter I often made up long elaborate stories for the children I watched. Also today, one of the children who has been the most aloof of the group, really wanted me to understand something he was trying to tell me so he put his two little hands on my face and looked at me right in the eye and told me the important thing. These are the connections and the experiences that make a rich, full life. These heart connections cannot be replicated in any other way than by taking the time to make them.

I love the memories I have as a preschool mom/teacher. I thought I would be sad at the idea of being done with this phase of life…but I’m not! So far, I am just so excited for the next phase. Anna is so excited for kindergarten! I am excited to be at the school more, to have some time to myself, to spend one day a week at the temple. Recently I was talking about the time I would have once all the kids were in school and I exclaimed, “Think of all the cleaning I could do!” Grant (knowing me well) corrected me by saying, “You mean, think of all the reading you could do?!?”

The following are some photos of the years of teaching. Sadly, there aren’t any of just Lizzie’s group. (Typical of a second child’s experience right?!)

More Bacon

April 1, 2015 by candicebeckwith Leave a Comment

Sam and William have an excellent new violin/viola teacher. Monday at lessons she asked Sam to go home and immediately practice what they had covered in the lesson to solidify the technique. On our way home I asked Sam if he was planning on practicing like she suggested. He was not very excited to do it since he had just had a long lesson and an hour of practicing before his lesson (cramming). He told me he would if I supplied him with a month’s worth of endless bacon. We negotiated for a few moments then he stated, “Bacon is my currency.” It is nice to know what motivates the boy. Better bacon than the two things William (as a kindergartner) told me he loved most in the world: guns and money.

Motherhood Is So Awesome

March 10, 2015 by candicebeckwith Leave a Comment

This morning I was at Walmart with Anna. She was sitting in the shopping cart- in the main part surrounded by all of our groceries. She began to complain that her stomach hurt. She had awakened just before we left to take the kids to school and we were doing the shopping on the way home.  I told her maybe she was just hungry since she hadn’t eaten yet. A few minutes later she exclaimed, in a panic, that she thought she was going to throw up. We ran to the bathroom and made it to the door before she lost her bedtime snack of grapes all over the floor, her hair, her jacket, and…all the groceries in the cart. Let me tell you, that was not a fun clean-up job! After that experience I still say “motherhood is so awesome”  because even though the clean-up was NOT awesome, I got to see Anna grow in her suffering. She was such a trooper. She was so sweet and lovely. She tried so hard not to make a mess! And watching her make the best of the situation was so tender.  Best of all, when we resumed our shopping trip (she was feeling better and we still had about ten things to get), and I told her, “If you have to throw up again please make sure you turn your head and do it on the floor” she demonstrated by pretending to throw up over the side with this purely angelic look on her face followed by a conspiratorial grin.

Fancy Schmancy

March 9, 2015 by candicebeckwith Leave a Comment

This week was full of great opportunities to dress up! It started with the Wednesday night youth activity where the young men and women submitted their favorite youtube videos and then came dressed up for the awards. Like a Grammy’s or Emmy’s or whatever prize good movies get (I can never remember!).  The kids were excited for different reasons. Sam was excited to see the videos, Lizzie was excited for a chance to dress up. It was fun to see her wearing an old dress of mine and so great to see her get excited about getting ready.  She found the hairstyle she wanted online and I attempted to make it work. Not bad for my first try if I do say so myself! Once everyone was ready I could suddenly see into the future of formal dance preparations! I can imagine when Sam and Lizzie are 16 and 17 having them both getting ready for a formal dance. Who knows, maybe by then they will be good enough friends that they will want to double date? With the two of them being only 14 months apart in age, it is not too farfetched to think that they might even be interested in dating each other’s friends! Aren’t my big kids handsome? Not to mention my good-looking husband!

Falling Rainbows

March 1, 2015 by candicebeckwith Leave a Comment

IMG_2996

Today Anna came running in from playing in the falling snow. She said, “MOM! Mom! I have something to show you that is really amazing!!!” We ran outside and she pointed this out and said with all of the excitement that only a five-year-old can express, “A rainbow fell on the floor!!!”

I almost didn’t come out when she asked me to. I almost just saw a cracked and pitted driveway in need of repair. I almost felt annoyed that someone leaked oil on our driveway. Instead, thanks to the perspective of a child I saw the gift and wonder of a rainbow that fell on the floor just for our enjoyment. Thank you Anna.

Chicken Thoughts

February 26, 2015 by candicebeckwith Leave a Comment

Chicken photography by: Rolf Hagberg Photography

Over Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day weekend we were in St. George visiting Grandma and Grandpa Beckwith. We went to eat at a restaurant called Culver’s which serves high quality burgers. Anna ordered chicken tenders (we called them nuggets). She took a couple of bites and then refused to eat them complaining that, “They tasted too much like chicken and that she liked the ones that didn’t taste like chicken.” (ie: the dinosaur shaped ones)

Monday morning we woke up to a big chicken mess in our yard. As of Sunday we only had two chickens left out of our original flock. We have several predators around here that have a hard time passing up a good chicken meal including hawks, racoons, a fox that lives in a thicket on the other side of our fence and cougars (there are occasional sightings in our neighborhood). The chicken who lost it’s life on Monday was beheaded and disemboweled but left on our lawn. Rosie, the remaining chicken came over to investigate. As she was standing there looking over her companion Lizzie looked out and imagining that Rosie was feeling pretty sad said, “I wish chickens understood the Plan of Salvation.” I’m just glad that our children understand it well enough that they can feel hope even in the face of death.
